Once again, I don't have a lot of time for reading. It has to be damn good to hold my attention. I liked Navajo Autumn so much, I had pretty much already decided a sequal couldn't match it. This is one time I don't mind admitting I was wrong. Chappell jumped into this sequal with both feet and hit the ground running. It's honestly twice as good as the first. There wasn't a single paragraph I breezed past because I didn't want to miss a detail. And frankly, I really enjoy these characters. Felt like I was right there in the truck with Charlie and Thomas climbing a remote mountain of the Ute reservation right to the precipice of danger. There were at least two twists that caught me completely off guard and a lot of great story telling in between. I won't ruin it by spending details here but I will tell you money spent on Chappell's sequal is a bargain. My mouth is still watering for that pit bar-b-que, too. What a great read. I highly recommend it. The end leaves you thinking there's another book ahead. Alright, Mr. Chappell, bring it on. Books set in the southwest region of the U.S. hold a special appeal for me. Having travelled in New Mexico, Utah and
Colorado, I can visualize the setting and it takes me back to that beautiful country. I love the stories about the way of life of different Indian tribes, and their specific interactions. I am always searching for more books like Hillerman's Chee and Leaphorn series, and I believe these come the closest. I will definitely buy the next book in the trilogy and hope that Mr. Chappell will add to the series. (My five-star ratings are reserved for those very rare books I would read again.)
A Beautiful culture comes alive on the pages and you become a visitor on the reservation. As you enjoy a delicious story you absorb so much of the lives and customs the different groups of Indians of the southwest. The best historical fiction I've read in a long time.
The books in this series, at least for me, are a fun break from most of the heavier non fiction stuff I usually consume. They don't spend a lot of time on plot or character development but just get right to the story. They are short and can usually be read in a few hrs. Perhaps I have a bit of a bias as an avid Hillerman fan and my interest in the Southwest. All in all I am enjoying these books and would recommend them as fun, light reading.
When I reviewed the first book in this series, I gave it 4 stars. This second book in the series is better. We learn more about main characters from the first book and some minor characters from the first book are "fleshed out" in this book. The story is somewhat more complex than the first book with more plot twists. It wasn't clear who the 'bad guys' were until the author wanted to reveal them. The ending is also more complete without many loose ends, and with hints of things to look forward to in future books. It was a much more satisfying ending compared to the first book where the resolution came suddenly and was followed by "The End."

I still miss Tony Hillerman's wonderful characters and style of story telling but I am beginning to like Charlie, Thomas, Sue, Lucy and Paul almost as much. That says a lot.
This is second in a series of mysteries set on the Navajo Nation. It was good to rejoin Charlie Yazzi and Thomas Bagay on their quest to rescue Bagay’s children from the bad guys. This takes them deep into dangerous Ute territory. If you enjoy learning about the differences between the Utes and the Navajo and the distinctive aspects of their respective cultures you will like this book. If you want to know what it is really like to live on the Navajo Reservation you will like this story. Chappell’s stories are Informative and entertaining, fun easy reading.
I usually don't fall into the "sequel" trap (e.g., One "Harry Potter" book was enough for me; same thing with "Hunger Games"). Maybe I don't like the "pressure" that goes with "How many of the ______ books have you read," or "Have you read the latest ______ book?" Maybe I haven't felt pushed by the original to read the next one. Who knows? And what difference does it really make?

I enjoy stories that combine a sense of the old with a sense of the new, and the "Navaho Nation Mystery" series meets that criterion head on. Think of the determination that characterized the development of the "Wide West" in our country's history; add the intensity of our interactions with the Native American nations we encountered during that development. What do you have? A modern adaptation of the stories that provided the old "Broken Arrow" TV series, in which an Indian agent worked closely with Cochise, chief of the Apache nation, in an effort to keep the terms of treaties that were being broken.

Add to that current day members of the Navajo nation interacting with law enforcement officials to solve a crime, and what do you have? The continuing saga of Native Americans trying to survive in a society that is totally foreign to them and matching wits with the law.

For the same reasons that I love watching Westerns on TV, whether it's "The Rifleman" reruns on Saturday mornings or the new "Longmire" on Monday night, I was drawn to read "the next" book in this series.

Sometimes familiarity with the original helps one understand stories that follow, and I believe that to be the case with the "Navajo Nation Mystery" series.

Great book! The characters and the plot are well thought out. Probably many notice the setting and are familiar with the area via Tony Hillerman's novels.
While the settings are familiar the characters and stories are fresh and unique. I've read the first 2 novels in the series and enjoyed them immensely. 5 stars from me!
