Whisper by Chelsea M. Cameron is about a girl, Anna, who can hear the dead. She's been able to do it all her life. Unfortunately, her parents don't believe her. They think she's nuts. Anyways, one night a dead guy starts bugging her. He doesn't act like the other spirits she's encountered. Meaning he has no interest in crossing over. She nicknames him Jack. When he brings her the victim of a local hit-and-run, a girl named Tracy, Anna knows there is something definitely different about Jack.I wasn't disappointed with this story. The mystery of Jack, Tracy's death and the threat of Anna being put back on her meds had me eager to turn the pages. I was so scared her parents would force her on the meds and all the spirits would disappear. Especially Jack. I loved the interaction between Anna and Jack. Their banter was cute and the way she tried to convince herself she was reading into his words was adorable. The mystery of what Jack was slowly unraveled throughout the book at a pace that didn't leave me annoyed. The same with their relationship. It wasn't insta-love, but it grew at a pace that wasn't too slow for me either.
Anna's ability to see spirits wasn't a basket full of roses either. When she tried to tell family members about Tracy's spirit, there wasn't instant belief. She had to find the right person who would believe her. Her friends as well. They didn't just say, "Oh, you're our friend so you must be telling the truth!" There was fear and skepticism that created some interesting conflict. Although, personally, I wouldn't have been so quick to forgive the one friend.
One thing I liked about this story was how Anna's ability wasn't the center of her world. She had girls night where Jack was not allowed. She did activities with her little sister and had a job. The world of the dead crept into her living life a lot, but it didn't feel like she completely abandoned the land of the living just to help spirits. I see that in a lot of paranormal stories. The character finds out about the paranormal world and abandons their old life for it.
Over all, I enjoyed the story and give it four stars. The writing was pretty smooth. There were times when the beginning of the paragraph said one thing, and then the end said the same thing in a different way, but it wasn't often enough to be annoying. I spotted a few minor typos, but again, they weren't big and I was too eager to find out how the story ended to care about them. I do think formatting gnomes gnawed on my copy of Whisper. When Tracy or Jack talked it was with italics and sometimes their words wouldn't be italicized or other times the whole paragraph would be. Hiccups like that happen during upload and this isn't the first time the gnomes have attacked.

Whisper The Whisper Trilogy Book One eBook Chelsea M Cameron Reviews
I liked the book, yet I didn't. The girl can hear and sometimes see spirits. She does all that she can to help them move on. But then a very old spirit who is actually young, becomes her aid. He is always in her head listening to her conversations and talking to her. But she can't talk to spirits inside her head. She has to talk out loud. Her mother wants to institutionalize her. But she has fallen in love with her aid. I just don't know about that part. I don't plan on buying the sequels. This book isn't for me, but maybe you will like a love story between a living girl and a long dead spirit.
I downloaded this to my phone a while ago (the only way I can read books). While sitting around in the GP's waiting room, shunning the usual stupid magazines on the table, I started reading this book. I had a hard time to tear myself away from it for my actual appointment, so when I got home, I kept reading! I finished the entire book in two days (it even kept me up past midnight) and I just wanted to leave a quick review to say how much I enjoyed it.
Granted, the way Jack more or less stalked Anna grated on my nerves at times, or the way Tracy suggested Jack was dangerous but that never really went anywhere... but there were so many good points about this book! The voice of the main character. The way her parents' behaviour made ME frustrated while reading the book (so, very well-written). The sweet and genuine-feeling romance. I am eager to read the next installment, and I can only say well done for a self-pubbed book! Hardly any typos spotted (though there are a few). The only complaint I have is about the cover image - it doesn't look that professional and I would urge the writer to upload a different design in order to draw in more readers and give this book the recognition it deserves. )
Anna can hear the dead and finds that she needs to help them on their way. When a new dead guy named Jack comes along, he does not want to be helped on his way and instead makes plan to stick around for a long time. Unfortunately for Anna, there is the problem that Jack becomes more and more appealing the longer he stays. When she is found talking to thin air, her parents medicate and threaten to institutionalize her.
There were several plot lines threaded together in this story. First off is the relationship between Anna and Jack and learning the truth of her abilities. Second is the spirit Tracey that wants Anna to help get closure in her past life. And third is the way the parents and one friend deal with Anna and her strange ability. Everything is meshed together nicely to keep the plot going well throughout the book.
I would have to say much of the plot was predictable. I knew from one of the first meeting with Tracey, who hit her. But also the author worked predictability into the story to strengthen it. The parents for one did the most predictable thing I think a parent would do if their daughter said she talked to dead people- sent her to a psychologist.
Edit was okay. There were a few instances where I stopped to reread, but the story was compelling enough to keep me going. Cover is pretty but didn't tell me much to expect from the story. There is symbolism to the cover that you find through the book, but I did not what to expect from the cover alone.
Recommendation If you like ghost type stories- especially for those that like the TV show Ghost Whisperer- this is the book for you. (I will be recommending it to my mother who likes happy ghost stories)
