Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help. While working on a biography of the late poet Lydia Brooke, she has uncovered information that has her convinced Lydia's suicide five years ago was really murder. As Duncan begins his investigation, another murder occurs closer to home. Now he finds himself frantically searching for clues in Lydia's complicated past to find the killer before he strikes again. Award-winning author Deborah Crombie has crafted a beautifully written, multilayered mystery that leaves you gasping with surprise. Jenny Sterlin's narration deftly creates an air of suspense while capturing every nuance of the language.

Dreaming of the Bones (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Crombie Jenny Sterlin Recorded Books Books

I didn't actually read the book. I listened to it. The narrator was changed for this audiobook. The previous audiobooks were done by Michael Deehy in a very posh English style that at first I found kind of pretentious but once I got used to him it was great. Then they switched to Jenny Sterlin and it was off putting at first. Since there are two main characters one male and one female it works out as the male narrators seem to do better with male characters and the female narrators with female characters. Not very often does an audiobook have multiple narrators but that would be awesome! Each of the Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James mysteries is not a standout mystery buy itself but I am really enjoying the development of the story between Duncan and Gemma as it flows through the books. These books/audiobooks definitely should be read or listened to in order.

Dreaming of the Bones (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Crombie Jenny Sterlin Recorded Books Books Reviews

I love the series and can say I loved the book but like the title of my review the waters ran deep in this book and the poetry occasionally missed its mark with me. In fact the opening section had me befuddled enough that I almost did not persevere. That would have been a real loss because it is a great story. For those who have literary souls and love the language of poetry , this book will be richer for their understanding. For those of us not so inclined we are made richer by the opportunity to see through a poets eyes ...
It is good mystery and a good study in characters.... Enjoy!
I have read several of Deborah Crombie's mysteries featuring Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. I haven't read them in order, and I appreciated this background on Duncan's ex-wife Victoria and how Kit came into Duncan's and Gemma's lives. This is in an unusually complex mystery. In addition to Duncan and Gemma, the reader comes to understand the perspective of Vic, the subject of her biography, Lydia Brooke, and Kit, as well as several people whose lives intersect with theirs. The possible motives and suspects for an old and a new murder make the plot very involving. Another positive aspect of Crombie's mysteries is that--in contrast to many police procedurals--Crombie is generous with positive and supportive relationships among the characters. Highly recommended.
Dreaming of the Bones by Deborah Crombie
A bit of a departure from the earlier books in the series. It does not start with a murder or even a crime – but a phone call. Duncan’s ex-wife, Vic, calls him asking for help with a biography she is writing. The woman who walked out on him without a word, now needs his help. She believes the subject of her biography may have been murdered instead of committing suicide as originally ruled. Gemma is at first jealous and upset by Duncan meeting with and helping Vic.

It turns out that secrets galore surround not only the subject of the biography, but Vic herself. The end results might have lasting consequences for Duncan and Gemma.
I generally avoid books written about the English police, but I happened to pick up Crombie's latest (Sound of Broken Glass) and got hooked on the author. This book give you a little history lesson about Duncan Kincaid and his first wife, Victoria, an English Professor who is writing a biography of a young poet who was thought to have committed suicide. Naturally, Duncan starts investigating the facts of the case with his partner, Gemma. Like all of Crombie's books, there are lots of twists and turns in the investigation, as well as in Duncan and Gemma's relationship. I can't say enough about how much I enjoy Crombie's writing. Every book is different, well researched and interesting. I'd highly recommend Dreaming of the Bones and any other Deborah Crombie novel.
I finished this book last night and I am so glad I began the series with the first book. The writer's skill with plot, character development and style
increases with each novel. I enjoy her descriptions as it is just enough to let my imagination finish it. I am looking forward to reading the
entire series and would recommend reading it in order for full enjoyment.
I picked up the series with this book. I fell in love with Gemma and Kincaid in this book. The mystery of a teenagers disappearance is the beginning of a tragedy that impacts the lives of the innocent as well as the guilty. Many twists and turns keep the plot moving at a very fast pace. I don't start their stories until I can read straight thru.
DREAMING OF THE BONES (DUNCAN KINCAID/GEMMA JAMES BOOK 5) is written by Deborah Crombie.
This was the best title yet. Each title in this series has improved and grown in scope - more detail; more in-depth characterization; a very personal sense of place; intriguing and multi-layered mystery; very thorough detecting by D Kincaid and G James.

Duncan’s ex-wife, Vic, (Victoria Potts Kincaid McClellan) calls up out of the blue, asking for Duncan’s help. They have not seen each other for years - not since she walked out of their marriage without a word. Vic is working on a biography of one Lydia Brooke, a local poet. One of an inner circle of ‘literati’ from Cambridge in the 1960s, Lydia Brooke is of great interest to Vic. She can’t get over her suspicions that Lydia was murdered, as opposed to her ‘assumed’ suicide. Vic’s persistent questions begin to annoy and unsettle several of Lydia’s former friends. Is Vic in danger?

I like the poems of Rupert Brooke that introduce most chapters. Brooke’s background and the references to Cambridge and its surrounding areas help set an atmosphere for the time period.
I also like the way the case intertwines with Duncan and Gemma’s personal lives.

Highly recommended.
