The battle of Sekigahara has just ended, as armies of rival samurai clash across Japan to be the next Shogun. All this seems far removed from Kami, a boy who quietly goes about his everyday life in his farm village until one day he trips over the unconsious body of a warrior hidden in the long grass.

That discovery will lead him on an adventure across the warring kingdoms, facing assassins and enemy soldiers as he journeys to the capital to face the new Shogun. Through his travels he aspires to become a samurai, and in his many challenges he eventually comes to understand what it means to be one.

This book is exciting and very hard to put down. If you are interested in 16th and 17th century japanese stories about samauri's and shoguns etc, then you'll just love this book. You don't have to be a pre-teen to read this, i myself am middle aged and read these story books as they are very hard to find. there is no love/sex in this book, nor the other 2 books from this same author/story line and you don't need that. the story line itself carries you though the life of the main character, kami. the story is about him as well as the other characters he picks up along the way in his travels throughout japan to get to the shogun in osaka. i won't go any further as i don't want to spoil any of the story line or plot, but if you are like me and simply enjoy reading about this time period in japan and you want simply a really good book, with a great story line and awesome characters, then you won't be sorry after reading this book as well as the other 2 books in this series. i only hope and pray that this author continues the story line to include a book 4. enjory this book.

Samurai Apprentice edition by David Walters Children eBooks Reviews

This book was written in a very simplistic style. It was interesting and good. I will probably read all the books in this series because the lives of the samurai are interesting.
I am only an occasional reader and do not consider myself an expert in any fashion. However, I really enjoyed the storyline and reading this first installment(?) for a trillogy. I have searched all over and cannot find and additional book for this, so it ends abruptly and incomplete.

One thing I did appreciate in the writing, the authoer does not spend endless pages describing a damn room or field like so many authors do. He focuses on the storyline.

I was entertained but the store is incomplete.

Cannot find any web links to the author either. I really wanted to make contact for info about the additional installments.
It is like stepping into a time machine and becoming present in an exciting period of feudal Japan. A most realistic read wonderfully paced for maximum action. I had to buy the whole set because I could not stop myself reading. I will hate it when I finally reach the last page...
The book is set immediately after the unification of Japan during the Sengoku period. The events of the novel are a-historical, but are well written none the less. The story follows a young farm boy, as he is apprenticed to a samurai and that events that surround his journey. The plot is more action movie then historical fiction, but is still decent. For the price (.99) it's certainly worth checking out if you are interested in time period and subject matter.
Kami's life was fulfilled by a chance. His dream of being Samurai was beginning and he had a lot to learn as he began to serve his many masters and fight his fears.

A good well written book based on excellent research on a commoner becoming a Samurai. A very exciting read as Kami begins to fill out as a man.

Quick exciting reading. Can't wait to start book two.
I found this to be a sparely and well-written, pretty realistic, interesting series that gets the main details of the Code of Bushido and traditional Japanese society and its clan obligations right, as we see played out the conflicting loyalties and the narrow pathway such a code and clan obligations, their strictures and loyalties, force characters to walk (and sometimes manipulate). Moreover, how, in the case of the Ninjas, living outside of the code of Bushido--but having their own code--leads to a different mindset and actions.
I've always loved things Japanese, and Samurai is an instant draw. Up front, the plot is contrived (too much luck), but, hey, with 4 volumes presently in the series, you know that some of the main characters (of those added and subtracted -much like Game of Thrones) are going to survive at least through the 4th. Contrived as it is, the story and characters are all well constructed and interesting. I'm hoping for 5 or more volumes; but why take my word for it. Buy this first volume and, if you too like it, buy the rest.
